Play Us visits Cappincur GAA
On Sunday morning, February 15th, we travelled to Cappincur to meet chairman Mike Tormey.
An hour later I left with one clear impression: this is a club moving forward, together.
Mike welcomed us in at 11am and, like any good club person proud of their home, the tour started straight away. From the gym to the stand, from the recently upgraded goal nets to the walking track, everything spoke about care, ownership and energy.
The gym in particular is special. Though only a few years old, it already feels like the heartbeat of the club. Players have decorated it, added their own flags, and created a place where improvement is expected. Some are in before sunrise; others are there late into the night. For a small rural community on the crossroads outside Tullamore, it’s a brilliant reflection of standards.
Community
Mike lit up when he spoke about the tractor run fundraiser too. A huge turnout, massive goodwill and a reminder that the club belongs to everyone in the parish. but what stood out most was how clearly the club understands its future.

“This is a true reflection of what Cappincur stands for, our community, our volunteers, and our players, Cappincur Ógs are hugely important to us and also helps prepare them for St Vincents and Naomh Malaoise LGFA when they are old enough. Getting our boys and girls involved from an early age is the foundation of everything we do. We have a club representative involved at every age group in St Vincents this year and this is something we also take great pride in. We are the heartbeat of Cappincur, and we only want to keep getting stronger.”
That idea of preparing the next generation, not just for senior football, but for St Vincent’s and Naomh Malaoise LGFA, speaks to something bigger than fixtures or facilities. It speaks to continuity. To structure. To pride in development.

Why Play Us
Mike first turned to Play Us during his time as senior manager, organising challenge games when fixtures were hard to find. Play Us filled crucial gaps and kept the squad moving forward.
Now, as chairperson, he sees even broader potential.
“We’ve found Play Us to be a brilliant way to organise games both within our county and beyond. It’s perfect for planning team trips, as you can easily line up a fixture near wherever you’re travelling. Most importantly, it helps ensure your team always has exciting challenges to look forward to throughout the year. Definitely worth having for any team that loves to compete.”
Not just for the senior footballers, but for the juvenile amalgamation St Vincent’s and for other teams using the grounds. If more groups can find the right opposition quickly and easily, it strengthens the whole club.
And when a club is built on momentum, that matters.

Carry the Baton
Older generations built the foundations, produced county success and created a club identity people are fiercely proud of. The current group have grabbed that responsibility and are adding their own chapter, upgrading facilities, raising standards, and refusing to stand still. That idea runs through everything
We finished up in the stand, talking about the season ahead while photos were taken and plans were made. It was relaxed, honest and optimistic.
Cappincur feels like a place that knows where it has come from, and is determined about where it’s going next.
From all of us at Play Us, thank you to Mike for his time and openness. Clubs like Cappincur show what’s possible when player experience is prioritised. We’re excited to visit more clubs in the weeks and months ahead, highlighting how more meaningful games can enhance the player journey, and ultimately strengthen the entire club. In Cappincur, The baton is in safe hands.
