Club visit to Delanys GAA
First Impressions
There are some visits that tell you everything you need to know within five minutes. Walking into Delanys GAA in Cork, that was the case.
Five teams training on the one pitch. Boys and girls side by side. Coaches constantly encouraging. Parents fully engaged on the sidelines. Noise, energy, and positivity everywhere.
It wasn’t forced. It wasn’t staged.
It was just a club in a really good place.

Delanys is being driven forward by good people.
Ger Maher, the club chairman, has been using Play Us for a number of years. Around him, there’s a younger committee bringing energy and momentum.
There’s a clear intent:
- Grow numbers
- Build participation
- Restore the club’s place in Cork
And from what’s happening on the pitch, it’s working.
What players really want?
There was one simple question put to the players:
“Do you prefer training or games?”
The answer was immediate.
And consistent.
Games.
Not one hesitation.
That’s the reality at all level. Players want to play. They want matches. They want the experience of the game itself, not just drills.
The Reality in Most Clubs
Across nearly every club, the same issues come up:
- Coaches relying on Whats App to organise games
- Endless back and forth trying to find opponents
- No clear visibility for chairpersons or secretaries
- Missed opportunities to get players more game time

Where Play Us Fits In
Delaney’s have been using Play Us for a number of years now.
It’s not something extra. It’s part of how they operate.
- Coaches can organise games quickly
- Admin is reduced
- Players get more opportunities to play
- The club is always in the loop.
And importantly, it aligns with what the players themselves are asking for.

A Club Going in the Right Direction
Delaney’s is a club with history.
But more importantly, it’s a club with momentum.
You can see it in:
- The numbers on the pitch
- The energy in the sessions
- The involvement from parents
- The attitude of the players
This is what rebuilding looks like, not in theory, but in practice.
